Is Υ ( 3 S ) a pure S − wave ?
Assuming the QCD multipole expansion is applicable to hadronic transitions of Υ(3S) into lower level bottomonia, we consider the possibility that Υ(3S) has a D−wave component. I present highlights of recent CLEO studies on the Υ(1S), Υ(2S), and Υ(3S). The CLEO Collaboration has observed the first hadronic transition among bottomonium (bb̄) states other than the dipion transitions among vector states, Υ(nS)→ππΥ(mS). In our study of Υ(3S) decays, we find a significant signal for Υ(3S)→γωΥ(1S) that is consistent with radiative decays Υ(3S)→γχb1,2(2P ), followed by χb1,2(2P )→ωΥ(1S). It is shown that the rates of the decays Υ(1 3 D 1) → η Υ(1S) and Υ(1 3 D 2) → η Υ(1S) should be comparable to and likely exceed that of the recently discussed in the literature two-pion transition Υ(1D) → π π Υ(1S). The reason for this behavior is that the discussed η transitions are enhanced by the contribution of the anomaly in the flavor singlet axial current in QCD.
